First-Time Campervan Hire: Everything You Need to Know

Hiring a campervan for the first time can feel a little daunting.
You might be wondering what it’s like to drive, where you’ll park, what you need to pack, how the power works, whether you’ll remember everything from the handover, and what happens if you get stuck while you’re away.
The good news? It’s much simpler than you probably think.
Campervan hire is one of the easiest ways to experience freedom on the road without committing to owning a van. You get the adventure, the comfort, and the flexibility — without the build costs, storage worries, or long-term responsibility.
And once you’ve got the bug, you’ll never go back.
At Wild River Campers, we want your first campervan hire experience to feel smooth, simple, and exciting from the moment you collect the keys.

A Friendly Handover Before You Set Off
When you hire a campervan with us, we’ll give you a friendly handover and walk you through how everything works.
There’s no rushing, no confusing jargon, and no expecting you to remember every tiny detail on the spot. We’ll show you the important bits, including how the bed works, where things are stored, how the cooking setup works, and anything else you need to feel confident before heading off.
You’ll also get a welcome booklet in the van, so if you forget something while you’re away, you can have a quick look through and refresh your memory.
And if you still need help, we’re always on hand with a quick WhatsApp message or phone call.
Handy Videos for Extra Peace of Mind
Alongside your handover, we’ll also send you some handy videos.
So if you’re away and can’t quite remember what was said when you collected the van, you can watch them back. You’ll get another little reminder from me, probably rabbiting on about how to do it, but it means you can relax and enjoy your trip without worrying.
It’s all part of making your campervan hire experience feel easy, friendly, and reassuring.

Simple Vans, Designed for Easy Adventures
Our hire campervans are built to be very simple to use.
There’s no complicated setup, no fiddly systems, and no need to mess about with solar or switches to get things working. The USB points are ready to use, and the vans are designed to feel more like plug-and-play than puzzle-and-panic.
You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need to have hired a campervan before. You need to pack your bags, pop some food in, and head off.
Maybe add a beach towel or two.
Nervous About Driving a Campervan?
Driving is often one of the biggest worries for first-time campervan hirers, and that’s completely normal.
I get it. I learnt to drive in a classic Mini, and now I can happily drive our extra-long wheelbase vans — so trust me when I say they’re not as scary as they seem.
Some people imagine a campervan will feel huge, awkward, or difficult to park. But our smaller campervans are a great place to start. They’re compact, easy to drive, and fit into standard parking spaces, making them much less intimidating than a large motorhome.
If driving a bigger van feels like a concern, trying a smaller campervan first can be the perfect way to build confidence.
You still get the comfort and freedom of a campervan trip, but without feeling like you’re navigating a house on wheels through a busy car park.

What to Pack for Your First Campervan Hire Trip
You don’t need to pack the whole house for your first campervan trip. In fact, please don’t.
As avid campervanners ourselves, we know exactly what it’s like trying to pack a van without taking far too much. That’s why we’ve tried to make our hire campervans as ready-to-go as possible.
Most everyday essentials are already included, so all you really need to bring are your clothes, food, and a few personal items.
Here’s a quick list of useful things to pack:
USB phone chargers
Clothes for your trip, extra layers, especially if the weather looks changeable
Toiletries
A couple of towels, plus beach towels if your trip includes the coast, a campsite shower, or a swim along the way.
Food, drinks, and snacks
Any medication you need
Books, games, or anything cosy for slower evenings
It’s always worth checking the weather before you go, then packing a little extra just in case. British weather does like to keep us on our toes.
All of our campervans have heating, but an extra blanket can still be helpful, especially if you’re travelling outside the warmer months or you like to feel extra cosy at night. A blanket is also lovely for sitting outside in the evening with a brew, watching the world go quiet.
What’s Included in a Wild River Campers Van?
We want your trip to feel hassle-free from the start, so our vans come with plenty already included.
With a Wild River Campers hire van, you’ll have:
Bedding
Cleaning products
Washing-up liquid
Tea towels
Tea, coffee, and sugar to get you started
Camping chairs
Cooking equipment
Crockery
Glasses and cups
Loo
Simple instructions and guidance
Handy videos to refer back to while you’re away
Having the essentials already packed makes life so much easier. You don’t have to think about camping chairs, washing-up bits, bedding, cooking equipment, or whether you’ve remembered plates, cups, and glasses.
You can load your clothes, add your food, bring a few personal essentials, and get going.
That’s exactly how we believe campervan hire should feel.
Bringing Your Dog Along
Got a little furry friend who loves an adventure too?
Good news — we’re dog-friendly.
We know dogs are part of the family, and for many people, a trip away wouldn’t feel right without them. Our campervans are set up to make travelling with your dog simple, whether you’re heading into the Peak District for muddy walks, driving to the coast for sandy paws, or just enjoying a cosy weekend away together.
Just bring your dog’s usual essentials — food, lead, bed, towels, and anything that helps them settle — and we’ll help make the rest feel easy.
Adventures are better when the whole family comes along, muddy paws included.
No Hidden Costs, No Stress
We want hiring a campervan to be smooth and simple.
No hidden costs. No complicated extras. No long list of things you suddenly realise you need at the last minute.
We also make the collection as simple as possible. You can leave your car with us while you take the campervan away, so there’s no need to worry about lifts, taxis, or working out where to park. Just arrive, swap into the van, and set off on your adventure.
The idea is to give you a ready-to-go campervan experience where the hard work has already been thought through. You bring your sense of adventure, and we’ll help with the rest.

What to Expect on Your First Trip
Your first campervan trip doesn’t need to be a huge road trip across the country. In fact, one of the best ways to start is to keep it simple and stay close to home.
As we’re based right on the edge of the Peak District, you don’t have to travel far to feel like you’ve properly escaped. You could drive half an hour up the road, find a beautiful campsite, and spend your first evening getting used to the van without the pressure of a long journey.
It gives you time to settle in, make a brew, work out where everything lives, cook something simple, and enjoy the slower pace of campervan life.
Then, once you’ve found your rhythm, you can start planning bigger adventures — North Wales, the Yorkshire Coast, the Lake District, the Norfolk Coast, or wherever the road starts calling.
Your first evening might be about making a simple meal, setting up the bed, getting cosy, and realising that life on the road doesn’t need to be complicated.
Then comes the best bit.
Waking up somewhere different, opening the door, and remembering exactly why you wanted to try campervan hire in the first place.
