3 Mistakes People Make When Starting Their Campervan Journey

Building a campervan is exciting. It is easy to get caught up in the dream of life on the road, the ideas, the inspiration, and how good a finished van can look. But from our own experience, one of the biggest mistakes people make is starting a build before they have really thought about how they want to use it.

At Wild River Campers, we know this because we have lived it ourselves.

Our story: from tent camping to campervan life

Wild River Campers began with a love for the outdoors, adventure, and making memories as a family.

Before campervans, there was a tent. We loved camping and everything that came with it — being close to nature, waking up outdoors, and the freedom of heading somewhere new. But after too many cold nights, wet mornings, and packing away a soggy tent in the rain, we knew we wanted a better way to keep enjoying the lifestyle we loved.

So, 14 years ago, we started our campervan journey. Moving from tent camping to a campervan gave us everything we loved about being outdoors, but with more comfort, more freedom, and far less hassle: no more endless packing and unpacking, less planning, and more time to enjoy the adventure. Like many families, we started with a VW T5. As a family of three, it felt like the right place to begin. But the more we used it, the more we realised that, while it gave us freedom, it did not quite suit the way we wanted to travel. We wanted more space, more comfort, and more flexibility, so we eventually upgraded to a bigger van.

That extra space made all the difference.

It also taught us something important: the best campervan is not just the one that looks good or seems like a good idea at the start. It is the one that fits your lifestyle and supports the way you actually want to travel.

That is why we see three mistakes time and time again when people begin planning their own campervan build.

  1. Not trying van life before they commit.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is jumping straight into a build without first understanding what they really want from van life.

If you are new to campervans, or even new to camping, trying before you buy can make a huge difference. Hiring a campervan gives you a proper feel for how you want to travel and what matters most to you. You quickly learn whether you need more space, a certain layout, extra storage, a stronger off-grid set-up, or simply a more comfortable place to sleep and relax.

This was something our own journey taught us, too. Even after moving from a tent into a campervan, we still learned so much from using our first van in real life. Some things worked brilliantly. Other things showed us very quickly what we needed more of.

What sounds perfect on paper is not always what works best once you are actually away in the van.

That is why we often encourage people to try van life first. It can help you make better decisions, avoid expensive mistakes, and feel much more confident about what you really need.

2. Choosing the wrong size for their lifestyle

Size is one of the biggest decisions in any campervan build, and one that people often get wrong.

For us, our first VW T5 gave us a brilliant introduction to campervan life, but over time, we realised it wasn't quite right for the kind of travel we wanted as a family. We loved the freedom, but it felt too small for the way we wanted to live and move on the road. Upgrading to a bigger van gave us more comfort, more storage, and more flexibility — and it changed the whole experience.

That does not mean bigger is always better.

A more compact van can be perfect if you want something practical, easier to drive, and useful as an everyday vehicle as well as for weekends away. But if you are planning longer trips, travelling as a family, or want more comfort and room to relax, going bigger can make much more sense.

The key is to be honest about how you will use it.

Do you want a van for day trips and weekends away? Will it also be your everyday run-around? Are you planning longer adventures across the UK or Europe? Do you need room for children, dogs, bikes, boards, or extra gear?

The right campervan size depends on your lifestyle, not just on what looks good online.

3. Focusing on the build before thinking about how they travel

This is often the mistake behind all the others.

It is easy to get excited by layouts, colours, design ideas, and clever features. But before any of that, it is so important to think about how you will actually use the van.

Will you be moving around every few days and making the most of off-grid travel? Or are you more likely to head to a campsite, park up for a week, and enjoy slower, more relaxed trips?

Do you need more storage for the outdoor kit? Do you want a fixed bed for convenience and comfort? Will you need extra power for longer trips or family travel? Do you want the van to feel compact and easy to use, or spacious and more like a home on wheels?

For us, once we understood how we really wanted to travel as a family, all the important decisions became much clearer. Layout, power, comfort, and storage all need to work together to support the way you actually live on the road.

A good campervan build is not just about style. It is about creating something practical, comfortable, and reliable enough to make every trip better.

Build your campervan around real life.

Over the years, our own adventures across the UK and Europe taught us what really matters in a campervan. What started as a hobby building vans for family and friends grew into Wild River Campers — a business built on real experience, expert craftsmanship, and a love of helping people find their own freedom on the road.

Today, we offer bespoke campervan conversions, thoughtful upgrades, and campervan hire for those who want to try van life before committing to ownership.

Because for us, it has always been about more than just vans.

It is about adventure, comfort, freedom, and helping people create memories on the road.

If there is one thing our journey taught us, it is this: the best campervan is not simply the one that looks good. It is the one that fits your lifestyle and helps you make the most of every trip.

We’re now on our third campervan, and with each van we’ve learned more about what really matters — comfort, practicality, and building a van that suits how you actually travel.
